Six years ago, I took a leap that changed everything. What started as a girls' getaway to Los Cabos, Mexico became the trip that awakened my love for international travel and opened my eyes to the possibilities waiting beyond my hometown. Looking back, that first passport stamp was more than a mark in a travel document—it was the beginning of a lifelong journey.
The Adventure Begins
In June 2019, my best friend and I boarded a plane bound for Los Cabos, Mexico. It was our first international trip together, and honestly, we didn't know exactly what we were doing. We weren't seasoned travelers. We didn't have years of experience navigating airports or crossing borders. What we did have were our passports, excitement, and a willingness to embrace the unknown.
"One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things. – Henry Miller"
As melanated women stepping outside the country for the first time, there was something empowering about knowing we were about to experience a new culture, a new destination, and a new side of ourselves. The anticipation was real, but so were the nerves.
The Customs Line That Felt Like Forever
One of the moments I remember most vividly was standing in line to go through customs. My heart was racing as I clutched my immigration documents, silently wondering if I had filled everything out correctly.
What if I missed something? What if I checked the wrong box? Would they send me back to the end of the line?
Everyone around me appeared calm and confident. No one looked nervous—or maybe I was so caught up in my own thoughts that I couldn't tell. While everyone else seemed to move effortlessly through the process, I was mentally rehearsing every answer I might need to give.
Looking back now, customs wasn't difficult at all. The hardest part was simply waiting. The line seemed endless, stretching on for what felt like hours. But eventually, I made it to the front, answered the necessary questions, and just like that...
The Stamp That Changed Everything
Then came the moment. My passport was stamped for the very first time.
It may seem like a small thing, but at that moment it felt monumental. That tiny stamp represented freedom, courage, curiosity, and possibility. It was proof that I had stepped outside my comfort zone and entered a much bigger world.
Moments later, I was directed to our transfer shuttle, and the reality of what we had just done began to sink in—we were officially in Mexico.
What I didn't know then was that this would be the first of many passport stamps. That single mark would ignite a passion that continues to shape my life today.
My First Glimpse of the Pacific Ocean
We checked into our resort Solmar Resort, tucked along the Pacific coastline in Cabo San Lucas. From our room we could see the Pacific Ocean stretching endlessly into the horizon and hear the rhythmic crashing of the Pacific Ocean before we even stepped outside. The view was breathtaking. Every morning felt like waking up inside a postcard. The endless blue water stretched farther than I could see, and the salty ocean breeze reminded me that I had officially left my comfort zone and entered a whole new world.
The rhythmic crashing of the waves became the soundtrack to our stay. The sound was both powerful and peaceful, and I found myself standing there, completely mesmerized.
I remember staring at the ocean and wondering, Can I actually swim in that? What if I drown?
The waves looked powerful and beautiful all at once. Then, almost instantly, I heard my mother's voice in my head: "You can't swallow all that water."
I laughed to myself because she was absolutely right. There was no way I could swallow all that water. But despite my nervousness, I couldn't wait to get in and experience it for myself.
That's the thing about travel—it often invites us to step beyond our fears and discover just how capable we really are.
The Beginning of a Travel Love Story
Los Cabos wasn't just a vacation destination for me. It was the place where I realized how much of the world I wanted to see.
It was the trip that taught me that uncertainty is part of the adventure. It showed me that customs lines aren't as intimidating as they seem, that new experiences are worth the butterflies, and that some of life's most memorable moments happen when you decide to go anyway.
Since that trip, I've continued collecting passport stamps, memories, and stories from my travels. But no matter where I visit, there will always be something special about that first international journey.
It was the trip that sparked my love for travel. And six years later, I still haven't looked back.
If you've been dreaming about taking your first international trip, let
